Sets: Children put things together based on a characteristic.
Sample activities:playing with blocks (size, shape), sand (heavy, light), water (full, empty), cooking, other comparing (hot, cold, etc.)
Classification: Children join separate sets.
Sample activities:playing with sets, wearing sets, manipulating materials with a variety of characteristics, using dramatic play kits.
Ordering: Children compare more than two things, put them in order in terms of common elements, learning that “three is more than two.”
Sample activities: playing with nesting toys, using graduated measuring cups, spoons, taking turns in an order, following a sequence
